Two Biggest Lies

Lord Headley

We remember Lord Headley; the well-known British Muslim Peer once say that he considered all ordained ministers of the Church as hypocrites. The dogmas to which they subscribed on a solemn oath forced him to that conclusion. They were repellent to the plainest common-sense and none except a fool or a hypocrite could conscientiously accept them as truths. But in so far as they were mostly Oxford and Cambridge men, he would credit them with sense enough to see the absurdity of most of those items. Hence the only explanation to his mind was that they must be hypocrites.

We would take the liberty of going a bit further. Whereas at the time of ordination, the church minister plays a hypocrite, all the rest of the days of his ministry, he is engaged in spreading two of the biggest lies the world has known. And here is how we are forced to that conclusion. Every second page of Church history is steeped red in human blood. At every second step along the sanguinary career of the Church, you come across a guillotine or a stake. As a man of some education, the minister could not he unaware of this. Yet Sunday after Sunday, how glibly he preaches of “Christian love” – and without a blush! He knows too that the Church left no stone unturned in throttling all knowledge and science. Yet when he comes to boast of what he calls modern civilization, he has the mendacity to speak of it as ” Christian” civilization.“Civilizing,” “humanizing” influences of Christianity! So goes the propaganda to advertise “modern civilization.” Lie, downright lie, we say. If the enslavement of a whole people means their “civilization” and their “humanization,” if the exploitation of humanity means its civilization, then surely Christianity has a brilliant record of civilizing” and humanizing mankind. Has not she (faded, illegible word) ?? manned the millions of Indians reducing them to abject slavery? Has not she robbed Egypt, Arabia, Syria, Mesopotamia, Tripoli, Morocco, etc., of their liberties? What more of “civilizing” and “humanizing” would you have? Poor Riff! She is having rather too much of it these days. Spain alone could not tame her down. Another “humanitarian” Christian land has volunteered to assist her. Did not Jesus come to relieve humanity of its burden? Christian powers must therefore join hands to relieve Muslim lands of the burden of their freedom, of their manhood, of their wealth and of their prosperity. “Civilizing” and “humanizing” influences indeed!

You have only to look at it, at close quarters to detect that this much trumpeted goddess of “Christian love” and “Christian civilization” is a loathsome ugly demon. Underneath their skin-deep polish, you will discover, that that much-vaunted “love” and “civilization” are nothing but greed masquerading as “humanitarianism.” If Jesus of blessed memory was love incarnate, modern Christianity is greed personified.

When in 1923, the Riff Delegation visited London to enlist the British people’s sympathies against Spanish brigandage, the present writer had the privilege of acting as their interpreter at one gathering. In the course of his address, the head of the delegation reminded the audience of the debt which modern Christian civilization owes to Islam, and how from the Universities of Moorish Spain, the forefathers of the present victims of Christian greed in the Riff, had flung open the gates of knowledge and science to Europe and ultimately proved the latter’s liberation. We could not better sum up what “Christian love” and “Christian civilization”  stand for than in the words of the chairman, who observed in reply : “Islam gave Christendom knowledge, science and freedom and in return we  send her aeroplanes, dreadnaughts, guns, bombs, shells and poisonous gas”!

But then the chairman was a retired British Military Officer. He wore the King’s uniform. We wish those wearing the robes of Jasus were equally true to their Master and instead of acting as so many hirelings to advertise the two biggest lies of “Christian civilization” and “Christian love” condemned, as did the Great Master in his day, the greed, the falsehood, and the hypocrisy of so-called Christians of the day.
